Why people celebrate half birthdays
Half birthdays started as a school tradition for children with summer birthdays, whose real birthday falls in the holidays. They are also a milestone for babies (the six-month check-up and first solid foods) and a handy excuse for anyone whose birthday lands near Christmas.
We count six calendar months forward. Counting 182 or 183 days instead can move the date by a day or two. Calendar months are what most people mean.

How do I calculate my half birthday?
Add six months to your birthday. Born on March 14? Your half birthday is September 14. If the month six months later doesn't have your date (for example August 31 → February), use the last day of that month.
When is the half birthday for August 31?
February 28, or February 29 in a leap year, because February has no 30th or 31st. Some people use March 1 or 2 instead.
Is a half birthday exactly 182.5 days after a birthday?
Not quite. Six calendar months can be 181 to 184 days depending on which months you cross. Most people simply use the same date six months later.
