Who decides where a generation starts?
Nobody officially. The US Census Bureau defines only the Baby Boom (1946–1964), based on the post-war birth spike. Other boundaries are conventions set by researchers and marketers, which is why you'll see Millennials start anywhere from 1977 to 1983. The Pew Research Center's dates are the most widely cited, and they're the ones used here.
Generational labels describe shared context (the technology, economy and events you grew up with), not personality. Pew itself announced in 2023 that it would lean less on generational labels because differences within a generation are often larger than between them.
