Why the Sun isn't "in" your sign's constellation

Horoscope signs are 30° slices measured from the March equinox (the tropical zodiac), named when they roughly lined up with the constellations (the two systems coincided around AD 285). Earth's axis wobbles like a spinning top, a cycle of about 25,800 years called precession, so the equinox slides west by roughly 1° every 72 years. In AD 2026 the offset is about 24°, roughly 24 days. Most people born today have the Sun in the constellation before their sign.

Sidereal (Vedic) astrology uses the constellations, so its signs sit about 24° earlier than Western ones today. Real constellations are also uneven in width, and the Sun crosses a 13th, Ophiuchus, from about 29 November to 17 December.

Did my zodiac sign change because of Ophiuchus?

No. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, twelve equal 30° segments tied to the seasons, not the constellations. Ophiuchus is a real constellation the Sun passes through, but it has never been part of the tropical system.

What is the difference between sun, moon and rising signs?
