Why birth time changes everything
As Earth turns, all twelve signs rise over the eastern horizon once a day: roughly one every two hours, though some signs take longer to rise than others. Slide through a day to see how quickly the ascendant moves for your birth date and place.
How the ascendant is calculated
We convert your local birth time to Universal Time using your browser's time-zone database (historical daylight saving included), then work out local sidereal time: which part of the sky is overhead at your longitude. Your latitude then sets the angle of the horizon to the ecliptic, the Sun's path, and the formula from Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms gives the degree of the ecliptic crossing the eastern horizon.
Results match professional software to within a fraction of a degree. The biggest source of error is almost always the birth time itself: hospital records are often rounded to the nearest 5 or 15 minutes.
Near the Arctic and Antarctic circles (above about 66°), some signs never rise at all on certain days, and the ascendant formula becomes unreliable. Astrologers use special house systems there.

How do I find my rising sign?

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably. The ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so without a time any of the twelve signs is possible. Check your birth certificate or ask a relative. Even an approximate time narrows it to one or two options.
What is the difference between my sun sign and rising sign?
Your sun sign depends on your birth date and describes your core identity in astrology. Your rising sign depends on the exact time and place and is said to describe your outward manner and first impression.
Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?
